Alternatives to cutting

When the urge to cut becomes too much, there are always other things you can do. Some things may work, others may not, but there are always alternatives to self-harm. If the urge is ever too much, try some of these things. Also, know that I am always here to talk to you if you someone:

  • Exercise.
  • Take a shower (make sure there is nothing you can use to harm yourself with).
  • Draw lines on yourself with a red marker.
  • Scribble on sheets of paper.
  • Write poetry.
  • Cuddle with a stuffed toy.
  • Be with other people.
  • Call a friend.
  • Watch a TV show (turn it off if it is triggering).
  • Think about the scars in the summer.
  • Paint your nails.
  • Go out to see a movie.
  • Eating something.
  • Do your school work.
  • Write a letter to someone but never send it.
  • Go into chat rooms to talk (make sure the chat is not triggering)
  • Play a musical instrument (or learn how to play one).
  • Sing as loud as you can.
  • Make your own list of things to do instead of S.I.
  • Snap a rubber band (or hair band) on your wrist.
  • Go to the zoo and rename the animals.
  • Let yourself cry.
  • Have a nap.
  • Play with a pet.
  • Re-organize your entire room.
  • Knit a scarf.
  • Read a book.
  • Colour your hair.
  • Get a piercing.
  • Listen to music (nothing that can trigger you).
  • Meditate. Track your breathing.
  • Bake cookies or another favorite food you like.
  • Alphabetize your CD’s and books.
  • Paint or draw.
  • Rip paper into really small pieces.
  • Hyper-focus on something like a rock.
  • Scream as loud as you want.
  • Dance.
  • Make hot chocolate.
  • Pop bubble wrap.
  • Count to 100.
  • Build a pillow fort.
  • Go for a long drive, walk, or jog.
  • Complete something you have been putting off.
  • Drink a cup of tea.
  • Start a new hobby.
  • Cook a meal.
  • Pray or read the Bible.
  • Talk to someone close to you that you trust.
  • Ride a bicycle.
  • Start a garden or water your house plants.
  • Stretch.
  • Make a CD of your favorite songs.
  • Go shopping.
  • Color coordinate your wardrobe.
  • Take a hot bath (make sure there is nothing that you could use to harm yourself).
  • Sort all you photographs.
  • Take a walk in the woods and breathe the fresh air.
  • Take your own dog, or a friend’s dog for a walk.
  • Read through this list again.
